Timeline

2007: Senior offers of Nepal Police and suppliers involved in Sudan Scam.  CIAA later counted that Rs 266.16 million was misappropriated in purchasing Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) and logistics worth for the Nepali peacekeeping mission in Sudan.

2009 Dec: CIAA started investigation on Sudan Scam. Over 48 senior police officials, including current IGP Thakuri, former IGPs Om Bikram Rana and Hem Bahadur Gurung are dragged into the scam.

2010: sub-committee (led by Pradip Gyawali) of State Affairs Committee in Legislature-parliament investigated and directed government to take action against people involved in Sudan scam. (link)  

2011: CIAA filed corruption charges against ­34 police officials, including one sitting and two retired police chiefs. They were accused of embezzling Rs 288.16 million (out of 445 million allocated) for the logistical expenses of police personnel deployed in Darfur, Sudan as part of the UN peacekeeping mission. 

2011 June 1: Government removed IGP Ramesh Chandra Thakuri from his post in connection with Sudan scam. Rabindra Pratap Shah is new IGP. (link

2012 Feb: Special Court convicted the IGPs and suppliers of corruption.

2017 Apr 30: Supreme court issued its final verdict on Sudan scam, sending multiple police officers including three former IGPs behind bars. Former IGP  Om Bikram Rana got  two years jail sentence and Rs 50,000 fine where as former IGPs Hem Bahadur Gurung and Ramesh Chandra Thakuri got one year prison and Rs 40,000 fine each. AIG Deepak Singh Thangden, DIG Deepak Shrestha, AIG Shyam Singh Thapa, and SSP Ravi Pratap Rana were also convicted. A division bench of Chief Justice Sushila Karki and Justice Bishwomber Prasad Shrestha passed the final judgment. (link

2017 June 21: IGP Rana, IGP Gurung, AIG Thangden and DIG Shrestha surrendered. IGP Thakuri, AIG Thapa, and SSP Rana still at large. (link)

2017 June 25: AIG Thapa surrendered. 

2017 June: SSP Rana surrendered. 

2019 Aug 30: Police arrested Shambhu Bharati, supplier.
